Fall is in the air folks! The morning air is dewy, the cicadas are beginning to quiet and most importantly, Starbucks has brought back their pumpkin spiced lattes. That’s how we mark the change in season, right? Well maybe it’s just the way I do it. I love the slow drawl from Summer into Fall, where the weather is cool but the sun still shines so brightly. I also love that I can start my morning with a hot coffee without breaking a sweat two sips in.

Now that I’ve started to ease into this season, I’ve realized that Fall mornings are the best. There is a lazy feel to them that isn’t quite there during the spring or summer. Fall is the perfect season to make easy French toast, and my Pumpkin Spice French Toast is delicious and super easy to make!

Ingredients

Pumpkin spice has become one of the most popular flavors of autumn in the last decade or so. Some might even call it an obsession. Whether it’s pumpkin spiced flavored coffee, tea or cake, pumpkin spice rules the fall season. Pumpkin spice is composed of the following spices:

  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Cloves
  • Nutmeg

All together these spices create a blend that, added to just about anything, make for a warmer, more flavorful experience. Have I sold you on it just yet?

How to Make Pumpkin French Toast

A bit of pumpkin puree is added to beaten eggs and spiced up with brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg to make the most decadent custard to drench bread in ever.

Fry this pumpkin French toast in a bit of butter and to make the edges super crisp while the inside stays tender and doughy. Try it and see for yourself. Your favorite fall breakfast is here to stay.

Tips on how to make perfect french toast

This pumpkin spice French toast recipe is so fantastic. Those fall spices we all love are found throughout the entire recipe, and the whole thing is absolutely divine.  If you ever wanted to eat pumpkin pie for breakfast, you are in luck because this pumpkin French toast has all the flavors and more!

French toast has always been a fairly simple recipe that we whip up on Sunday mornings or alongside mimosas for the perfect brunch with our girlfriends. But as always, there are plenty of mistakes that can be made. Believe me, I’ve made them all.

So here are a few tips to guarantee that perfect crispy-edged, pillowy soft inside and perfectly spiced french toast of your dreams.

Tip #1: Use the right bread and slice it properly

Start your French toast off with a too-thin slice and you’re just asking for disaster. The bread needs some heft to hold up to your liquids, or else it’ll start to fall apart before it even gets to the pan. So cut your own bread slices, making sure each piece is ½” to 1” thick.

Be sure to let your bread sit for a day or two before using it. Stale bread creates a sturdier base that makes for that crisp exterior.

If you’re in a pinch dry your slices in a 275 degree F oven for 10 minutes before giving them their first dip.

Tip #2: Don’t be afraid to use a bit of oil

Butter has quite the low burn point which means that if you’re looking for that extra crispy, golden brown experience you might burn your bread before you even get the chance.

Swap out half your butter for a neutral vegetable oil and your french toast will be wonderfully tender in the middle while maintaining a crisp exterior.

If you’d rather stick to butter than be sure to cook at a low heat. Low and slow wins the race folks!

Additional Pumpkin Recipes to Try

In my opinion, pumpkin is such an essential flavor for the fall season that it must be worked into as many recipes as possible.  I, myself, have used pumpkin in quite a few recipes since I started my blog (pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, caramel pumpkin lava cake, pumpkin pound cake, pumpkin cider doughnuts and pumpkin cinnamon rolls) and it seems like every year it becomes more popular. When I started thinking about what screams comforting breakfast to me, I immediately thought about french toast.

I adore having French toast all year round with a healthy addition of butter and syrup.  Adding the pumpkin flavor to this recipe only made it better, and I will be keeping as many cans of pumpkin around as possible to make it again and again. It has to be one of the best canned pumpkin recipes ever!
