Ingredients To Make London Broil

  • Olive Oil: A kitchen staple, and the base of your marinade. It helps to tenderize the meat and carry all the flavors evenly.
  • Soy Sauce: This adds a savory umami punch to your marinade. It’s a key ingredient for bringing a depth of flavor that’ll make your steak stand out.
  • Balsamic Vinegar: A little tangy and a little sweet, balsamic vinegar adds a unique zing to the mix, balancing out the other flavors.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: This is a classic in almost every meat marinade! It gives a complex, slightly tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with beef.
  • Garlic: Garlic is beef’s best friend, and nobody can tell me otherwise. Roughly chopped garlic cloves infuse the marinade with a bold, aromatic flavor that’s essential for any good steak dish.
  • Dried Thyme: Brings a touch of earthy and minty flavors to your London broil marinade.
  • Kosher Salt: It not only enhances the flavors but also helps in the tenderizing process of the meat.
  • Black Pepper: Freshly ground! It adds a subtle heat and a bit of a kick.
  • London Broil/Top Round: Despite its name, London Broil isn’t always a specific cut of meat but rather a method of preparation – broiling! When shopping for it, look for a cut labeled ‘London Broil’ or ‘Top Round Steak’ at your local butcher or grocery store. This cut is ah-ma-zing for absorbing all those delicious marinade flavors.
  • Unsalted Butter: This is your creamy base for the garlic herb butter. Some people use margarine but c’mon, butter is the only way to go.
  • Minced Garlic Clove: Adds a punch to your herb butter, because let’s get real, you can never have too much garlic.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice & Lemon Zest: These add a fresh, citrusy zing to the butter, cutting through the richness and brightening up the flavors.
  • Fresh Parsley: Finely chopped, it brings a pop of color and a fresh, herby note to your butter, making it a perfect complement to the steak.

Tips For Making The Best London Broil In The Oven

  1. Marinate with Patience: Don’t rush the marinating process, y’all. The longer your steak bathes in that flavorful marinade, the more tender and tasty it’ll be. Aim for at least 4 hours, but overnight is even better for a flavor that really sings.
  2. Invest in a Meat Thermometer: Want to nail that perfect medium-rare without any guesswork? Get yourself a good kitchen thermometer. It’s the secret weapon for ensuring your London Broil is cooked just right in the oven – not too raw, not too dry.
  3. Tenderize with a Mallet: For an extra tender London Broil, give it a good ol’ pounding with a meat mallet before marinating. This little workout breaks down some of the tougher fibers, making each bite as tender as can be.
  4. Slice Against the Grain: When it’s time to serve, always cut your steak against the grain. This shortens the fibers, making each piece more tender and easier to chew.
  5. Rest Before You Taste: After broiling, give your London Broil some well-deserved rest under a foil blanket for about 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring each slice is as juicy and flavorful as possible.
  • Beef Cut Swap: If you ain’t got no London Broil on hand, you can easily swap in a top sirloin or flank steak for this recipe. Both cuts broil beautifully and soak up that marinade just as well. Just remember, cooking times might vary, so keep that thermometer handy!
  • Herb It Up: Feel free to get creative with the herbs in your marinade. Rosemary, oregano, or basil can add new layers of flavor to this London Broil recipe. Just chop them fine and mix them right in.
  • Gravy Instead of Butter: If you’re more of a gravy person, go ahead and whip up a simple gravy sauce to drizzle over your sliced steak. Use the drippings from the broiling pan, add a little flour and beef broth, and you’ve got yourself a hearty topping.
  • Make It a Little Sweet: For a subtle sweet twist, try adding a touch of honey or brown sugar to the marinade. It’ll balance the savory and tangy flavors with a hint of sweetness.

What To Serve With This London Broil Recipe

How To Store & Reheat London Broil

After enjoying your London Broil, you’ll have to allow it to cool down to room temp before storing it. Once it’s cool, wrap the steak tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or place it in an airtight container. This helps keep it fresh and prevents it from picking up any odd fridge smells.

To reheat leftovers, you’ll want to do so gently to keep them tender. The oven works best here, just preheat it to around 250°F (120°C), and place the steak on a rack over a baking sheet. Cover it with foil to keep the moisture in, and heat it just until it’s warmed through – about 20 to 30 minutes. Avoid microwaving as it can toughen the meat.

How Long Will London Broil Last In The Fridge?

In the fridge, your London Broil will stay as good as gold for about 3 to 4 days. Just a little tip – give it a sniff test before reheating. If something smells funky, it’s better to play it safe and toss it out.

Can I Freeze Tender London Broil?

You’ve got options for freezing! You can freeze the steak after it’s cooked or as soon as it’s marinated. Just wrap it well in plastic wrap and then in foil, or use a freezer-safe bag. It’ll keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy it, thaw it in the fridge overnight before reheating or cooking.

  1. Great marinade! And the garlic butter made this cut of beef taste a whole lot more expensive. My daughter’s nickname as a toddler was babycakes so when I saw Grandbaby Cakes, I had to try your recipe! It didn’t disappoint, with great beef flavor and richness from the butter. I, too, cooked this outside, and then let the butter melt on top right before I pulled it off the grill. Fantastic. Thank you for another great recipe!

  2. What a wonderful marinade! I didn’t make the Garlic Herb Butter. But our London Broil was delicious! Cooked it on the grill. Thank you so much for sharing this delicious recipe!
