Gluten isn’ fair. Neither are carbs. I’m kinda sick of both robbing people of their glorious traditional baked goods. If you look at your family or friends, I am pretty sure someone in your circle is struggling with one or both.
My uncle Larry is the one in our family (that we currently know of) that suffers most with gluten issues. Every Thanksgiving in Mississippi, he brings his own gluten free cake and biscuit mixes to bake from while the rest of us get down on Big Mama’s homemade biscuits, cakes, and famous rolls. I feel for him.
The rest of us just may be afflicted with carb addiction. I have tried all types of diets in the past, especially low carb. These cookies help in both regards. First of all they are flourless; secondly they are sensational! The chewy texture is to die for. The chocolate is beyond intense.
The slight hint of orange zest really heightens the flavor of the cookies. You can never go wrong with citrus right? I had a combination of blood oranges and navels in my fridge but any will do for this cookie. I definitely added the blood orange flavor because their seasonal window will be gone before we know it. Without flour, the egg whites help to stiffen the batter and give it the structure of a cookie.
The results are completely decadent. You won’t miss a thing except the gluten and carbs of course. If you like these, you will also love these Hot Chocolate Cookies.
Flourless Chocolate Orange Cookies
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 3/4 cup dutch processed cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
- 3 large egg whites
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract make sure its gluten free
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Whisk together confectioner's sugar, cocoa powder, salt and orange zest in a medium sized bowl.
- Slowly whisk in egg whites and vanilla extract until combined. Continue folding the batter with a spatula. The mixture will get harder and harder to mix and will be quite thick. This is completely normal.
- Spoon tablespoons of batter on parchment lined baking sheet inch apart. Bake for 12-14 minutes then cool.
- Sprinkle with confectioner's sugar and serve. I love them warm.

I love this recipe. I have made it a few times now over the last 2 years. They are chewy and have a hint of bitterness with a heavy amount of chocolate and a ton of sweetness but it works. I like to double the orange zest and add 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice . Gives it extra flavor.
Can you freeze these baked cookies?
Absolutely! But I prefer freezing cookie dough before I bake them off.
Hi! I know this post is a year old but I had to leave my two cents. I’ve had this bookmarked forever because these looked amazing. I’m not sure if I did something wrong (I’m 99% sure I didn’t) but these came out very.. bad. They are a weird, chewy texture. Like, you start chewing and the cookie just kinda balls up in your mouth as you chew and chew. And they are so rich one leaves me with a stomachache 🙁 I honestly cannot remember the last time I made a bad cookie so I was disappointed. Thanks for posting though- it was fun to make at least. Not a good start to my low-carb month- haha!
Sorry you didn’t enjoy these Andrea.
I just baked these cookies and they are amazing!!! My kids loved them!!! I never realized how much flavor adding zest to the ingredients. How do you get your circles so perfect? I didn’t perfect the drop and go. 😉
I’m so glad you enjoyed them. I employ the exact same drop using a very rounded spoon which helps them come out a bit more round.
I could get with these easily and could use a little low carb in my life. Loving the blood oranges!
Thanks so much Sandra!
They do look irresistible. Love flourless cookies, recently made something similar but in the crinkle version.
Oh gosh I love those crinkle cookies. They are fantastic!
I can’t believe these cookies are flour less! They look amazing!!!!
These cookies are indeed flourless! Crazy right?
Brilliant, Jocelyn! I love orange and chocolate together. I can’t wait to try these. Pinned!
Hooray thanks so much Allison!
Flourless rules! My family is a cookie monsters and I bet there will be war if I make these and not share with them. What a fun combination!
